Outlander set for 9 August US première

American TV network Starz has announced the first season of Outlander, its upcoming television adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s historical fiction series, will première in the United States on 9 August.

Set in Scotland, the show follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a World War II nurse who is swept back through time from 1945 to 1743, where she becomes caught up in a conflict between Jacobite rebels and the British establishment. Separated from her husband (Tobias Menzies), she finds an ally in Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The latest trailer (embedded below) demonstrates the series’ attempt to straddle the sci-fi, historical, and romance genres.

The show’s 16 episodes were filmed primarily in a Cumbernauld studio, though a UK broadcast date has not yet been set.
